Chapter Fifteen

Ovide

I flew over the wall surrounding Magnolia Plantation, Angel’s ancestral home, and landed on the manicured lawn before shifting. I had been summoned by Armand, a summons I would normally have ignored, but this one was at the request of his mate. I was fond of Angel. She and I shared an understanding of the darkness I harbored inside; one that came as a result of deep loss and sorrow.

I had no idea what she wished to speak to me about.

Yes, I did. I had a very good idea. It was about the claiming mark. The horrible, shameful mistake I made which I would forever regret.

I strolled across the rolling grounds of the estate glancing out at the sparkling lake beyond. It was a picture of tranquility with the reflected sunlight sparkling off its surface. As I climbed the stairs to the front door, it opened before I knocked. Armand had anticipated my arrival.

Armand merely nodded in greeting. I nodded back. “Hello brother.’

He handed me a fluffy pink bathrobe to cover myself. “Angel told me to give you this to wear.”

While dragons had no modesty, and nudity in our human form was as natural to us as nudity in our beast form, humans thought otherwise. As such, the dragon males had grown so that they did not like other males naked in front of their mates.

I shrugged into the bathrobe. I had worn the garment before. It was of excellent quality and I adored it. “Angel wishes to speak to me?”

“We both do. I would like to ask if you have taken leave of your senses. My mate, however, has more sympathy that I have. What have you done?”

I sighed. “I can’t explain what I don’t understand.”

“So, you did mark her?” Angel was descending the marble stairs and I met her questioning gaze. “She is your mate? But, you said…”

“I know. It should not work this way.” I shook my head, frustrated. “It just happened. Everything just happened. I did not mean to. I did not want to.” Well, that wasn’t entirely true. I had wanted to mark her at the time. Very much so. “She is not my mate. She cannot be.”

“What are the two of you talking about?” Armand scowled and crossed his arms over his chest.

“I haven’t told Armand anything about, uh, you know what—your past. I wanted your permission first.”

I paused for a moment, and then nodded.

Angel turned to her mate and placed her hand on his arm. “Babe, Ovide already had a mate. Back in your old world.”

Armand’s eyes widened so much it looked as though his eyeballs would fall out of his head. “Wh-Where? W-Why? That cannot be. How can that be?”

Both turned their gazes on me. Armand’s, stunned; Angel’s, sympathetic. I wanted to explain, but I was unable to form the words. The air would not travel from my lungs through my throat and over my tongue.

Finally, Angel spoke up. “She died.”

Armand stumbled backwards, his arms flailing behind him looking for purchase, which he found.
